Dra. Sokhna MS Yakhine-Diop

Sokhna M. S. Yakhine-Diop is a postdoctoral researcher. She began her scientific
career at the University of Sidi Mohamed Ben Abadallah in Fez, Morocco and obtained there a Master in “Technologie au Service des Sciences Biomédicales”(2006-2008).
In 2009, she joined the Université Paris-Sud XI (France), where she did her master in “Signalisation Cellulaire et Neurosciences” at the Faculty des Sciences d’Orsay. This master of research led her to Cáceres at the Universidad de Extremadura, where she performed her master thesis and finally her PhD thesis on Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Autophagy. The latter has been awarded by an extraordinary prize.
Her PhD project was focused on the implication of protein acetylation in PD pathogenesis and/or autophagy impairment. Her aim was to determine the impact of acetylation levels in primary cells from PD patients with or without the G2019S LRRK2 mutation, the most common in PD cases. To date, she is working on the role of lysosomes dysfunction in the progression of neuromuscular dystrophies.
She has collaborated in european, national and regional projects respectively supported by COST Action-H2020, ISCIII, Junta de Extremadura and Isabel Gemio Foundation. She has also participated in others, mainly dedicated to the study of metabolism in PD cell patients and LRRK2 transgenic mice.
She got contracts with Universidad de Extremadura, CIBERNED and Fundesalud.
